WHAT'S ON | NOVEMBER

Northern Disco LightS: FILM + After Party @ Rich Mix Cinema + Junction House, London | 5th November

It might be bonfire night, but if you fancy swapping one brand of bangs, cracks and well mad visuals for another – something pretty special is going down in East London on Saturday the 5th. Kicking off at 9pm is the UK premiere of ‘Northern Disco Lights,’ part of the Doc’n Roll Film Festival, before a sumptuous afterparty offering begins down the road with the ‘Codfather’ – Bjørn Torske going b2b all night long with his Norwegian brother Mental Overdrive at Junction House in Dalston.

The film alone is something to behold; chronicling the rise of a group of friends growing up in the remote Norwegian town of Tromsø; isolated, insulated stamping their own take on electronic music through trademark high energy arpeggiated baselines and subsequently transforming the disco realm. They are now global superstars and if that doesn’t get your car started, then the Nords marshalling the party will certainly see to that. Back in Norway when they hosted events, people used to crawl along the venue’s roof and sneak in through the ventilators just to get in. Torske is an underground legend – a purveyor of wobbling leftfield disco, wonky percussion and rambling drumbeats and his partner on the night can lay claim to the pioneering of the Arctic Circle rave scene.

Expect a dance floor meltdown - it’s going to be a beauty! In the meantime watch the trailer for the film.

Coastal Haze with San Soda, Telephones, Beesmunt Soundsystem & Mculo @ Corsica Studios, London | 11th November

We do parties too... Coastal Haze has organically morphed from a management and booking agency into a record label and as of this year, they also host damn good parties. Friday the 11th looks set to be another top quality dance with a well rounded collection of artists spinning and expect a warm and friendly atmosphere which follows the ethos of the brand.

After having been lucky enough to see Beesmunt Soundsystem at Boiler Room a couple of weeks ago I can tell you these dudes are serious selectors. Mr San Soda needs no introduction, spinning records is his second nature, expect him to bring the heat. Joining those two is Running Back affiliate Telephones, who just dropped the dope LP, Vibe Telemetry, and Mculo who releases on his own imprint, Roots By The Oder.

Tickets in advance vary from £6-10 (which only makes the evening more appealing).

Ovation: Romare Live @ The Pickle Factory, London | 23rd November

Add traditional Irish Folk music to dirty sex and then divide by religious hysteria: you won’t get Shay Given but you might come somewhere close to an event that should be firmly embedded in your calendar: Romare’s debut live show on November 23rd. The evening with Ninja Tune’s effortlessly talented artist and full live band will premier his forthcoming second album Love Songs: Part 2, which lands November 11th; an expansion of a 2013 four-track EP laden with trademark samples and raw afro-funk feeling.

Expect uniqueness and a seamlessly composed show, delving from disco to psychedelic all patched flawlessly together… and with a little bit of luck, featuring his Grandma’s recorder and Dad’s mandolin. Combine this with a full visual display, the Pickle Factory’s intimate setting, a special guest TBA, and you’re guaranteed to leave at 11:30pm forgetting it’s only Wednesday night. Tickys may be a challenge given the capacity, but this is an artist who’s characteristically vibrant and memorable productions you’ll want to catch soon enough given their burgeoning status.

Avant Garde w/ Röyksopp Dj Set, Pachanga Boys & Kasper Bjorke @ Bankside Vaults, London | 25th November

Avant Garde grace us with a star studded, Nordic, electronic master class this November at the Bankside Vaults. Headlining the event are Royksopp the stinky synthers who are best known for ‘Eple’, the song on everyones Dad’s dinner playlist. Their album Melody AM in 2001 was voted as one of the albums to listen to before you die by the Guardian. A huge booking basically. They are then backed up by veterans Pachanga Boys best known for their massive single ‘Time’. Something that should be on everyones bucket list, to watch 'Time' played by the Pachanga Boys before you die. Just watch the Burning Man video on YouTube to get some idea of what it could be like. Joining the two is Kasper Bjorke who again follows the tone of the evening along the melodic synth line. Avant Garde keep in line with their melodic electronic sound after previous bookings Trentemoller and Kiasmos. It will be really interesting to see how Royksopp’s DJ set plays out, with such a fabled reputation it should be an exciting few hours. Either way, expect a harmonious evening at the Vaults on the 25th.
