One To Watch :: Sonny Fodera
“Jacking tech house with a deep flavour” – Sonny Fodera
Sonny Fodera is full of it! With two albums under his belt, being signed to the highly respected Cajual Records and Defected Records with numerous tracks doing damage in the charts, its no surprise that Mixmag featured him in their Hot Six in 2013. Sonny’s time is upon us, and its safe to say he’s taking it by the scruff of the neck swinging out first class records from every angle like there’s no tomorrow.
The Aussie born 27 year-old now based in London and Ibiza is letting off serious heat at the moment and for many is a one to watch. Sonny has had some influential heroes of the scene to guide him along the way, Cajmere, Derrick Carter and Frankie Knuckles to name a few. Cajmere was even so impressed with Sonny’s abilities in the studio that he decided to take him on under his own label ‘Cajual Records’ and sign what was Sonny’s debut album, ‘Moving Forward’. The ever-impressive DJ/Producer also has his very own label, Beatdown Music which has an array of juicy records. As you can see the guy’s already achieved so much which is evidence of his hard work ethic and his passion for what he does; all ideal components to success.
Sonny’s productions always trend rolling riffs, heavy basslines and meaty chords that he fits tightly together resulting in a clubbers paradise. More recently he has been tapping into the techno effect that makes his tracks even more compelling. The last 18 months have been a real whirlwind for Sonny with his rapid rise to fame from his debut album and he hasn’t looked back since with his notable love for music and infinite ability shining through. These elements have lead on to collaborations with huge artists, bookings at the likes of DC10, support from the biggest artists and holding the reputation as a top guy to work with!
Sonny kindly put together a banging little mix for us, tune in:
We got in touch with Sonny:
Early inspirations that got you into music?
I got into House Music when I first went out to Electric Circus a club in Adelaide to see Inland Knights play. Producers and Dj's like them and Derrick Carter, Lawnchair Generals, James Curd and Joey Youngman really got me into making House music, I have been doing it ever since.
Musical influences?
Producers like Cajmere, Maceo Plex, Huxley, Dusky & Hot Since 82 just to name a few. So many quality producers out there. I also love to just sit back and listen to 90's hip hop just for something different.
How long have you been producing music?
I have been making music professionally for 7 years now. I started making tunes when I was 16 messing around with Fruity loops and Cool edit pro, doing hip hop edits.
In terms of label releases and upcoming tracks, any exciting stuff that you can disclose on the horizon?
I am doing a compilation for Defected with a whole bunch of new edits and remixes on there. Also a new EP on my label Beatdown and Defected's new sister label DFTD, plus a new album in the works for Cajual Records.
Whats the number one thing you'd like to be able to cross off your musical bucket list?
Making a track with Dennis Ferrer is defiantly up there. Also playing back to back with Cajmere would be huge.
